Derek emigrated from England and began his winemaking career at Southbrook Farms Winery in 1991, and was named, “Winemaker of the Year” in 2000. In 2001 Derek moved to Niagara to become winemaker and business partner at Lailey Vineyard Wines where he cemented his reputation as one of the top winemakers in Canada. In the summer of 2015 Derek was not only appointed Winemaker at Karlo Estates to practice his art on Prince Edward County grapes but he was also named “Wine Person of the Year” by the National Capital Sommelier Guild.
An innovator with a big-hearted personality and undeniable talent, Derek is a legend in the industry. He was the first to use Canadian Oak barrels, making extraordinary wines. He favours low-tech methods and relies heavily on his highly-trained palate. Trusting his instincts is in keeping with the Karlo tradition. With painstaking attention to detail and commitment to excellence, Derek is dedicated to old world principles that make excellent wine.
