Our Estate Malbec, the only in the County, is made from the first harvest of Malbec grapes at Karlo Estate Winery and was picked at the end of October following one of the very best growing seasons. A long hot and dry summer followed by a beautiful fall produced ripe and balanced fruit with very intense flavours. Grapes were hand harvested; crushed ad de-stemmed into small fermentation bins. Fermentation was completed using only indigenous yeasts. The cap was punched down 2-3 times each day extracting colour, flavours and tannin from the skins. After 25 days on the skins, the fermentation was complete and the wine was pressed off the skins and transferred to small oak barrels for aging. The selection of barrels was 75% French oak and 25% Canadian Oak. Following 12 months in Oak the wine was racked from barrel, filtered and bottled.
This wine has a beautiful ruby violet hue in the glass and offers dark fruit aromas with a note of purple flowers. On the palate, there are flavours of ripe plum, black cherries and black currant, followed by a savoury note. A rich texture that is balanced with an acidity that brings out a citrus note on the finish. There are gentle tannin on the finish with notes of chocolate, black olive and tobacco.
This is a mouth-watering wine that is perfect for the table.
Drinks well and will cellar short term – 3-5 years.
Pair with lighter fair like mushrooms, roasted red peppers, potatoes, shallots, sage, rosemary, cumin and mint. Blue cashew cheese is especially good.
