Richard Karlo

Co – Founder – In Memoriam. January 26th, 1959 – November 26th, 2014


Richard Karlo was co founder and past winemaker at Karlo Estates.

Twenty years before starting Karlo Estates, Richard was making wine privately. His skill won medals locally, provincially and on the national level, achieving the designation of Master Winemaker.

In fact, Richard had the good fortune of winning awards in every competition he has ever entered from 1998 until his passing.  Some highlights included a Gold Medal in the Canadian AWO Competition in 2006, best red wine in Ontario in 2001, “Best Merlot” at the Ontario Wine Fair, a gold medal for his VanAlstine White in the International InterVin competition in 2002 and Finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards. 

As a Judge with the prestigious Wine Judges of Canada, Richard also sat on the board and was instrumental in overseeing the incorporation of the organization in 2005.  Richard regularly judged competitions in Canada and the U.S.

Additionally he was Vice-Chair of the Prince Edward County Winegrowers Association (PECWA) and co-founded the Ontario Viniculture Association (OVA).
