Karlo Estates is an artisanal winery, which integrates the best of old world and new world winemaking. We favour natural winemaking with little intervention. The results are well crafted wines of distinction, which are fruit-driven yet have balance and great complexity.

We have a wide range of offerings, where the unusual in usual. Interesting single varietals and eclectic blends showcase our style. A casual, comfortable approach and a warm, inviting atmosphere complete the experience. Because we sell out of every vintage, our wines are not available at the LCBO.

Karlo Estates undertook its first planting of grapes in the spring of 2006. The initial varietals planted were Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Frontenac Noir. Additional plantings in subsequent years have increased our vineyards to 14 acres, with more planned.

In addition to our estate-grown fruit we also purchase grapes from other top quality vineyards in Prince Edward County, and a few in Niagara.  We focus on County fruit first and purchase grapes from Niagara for varietals which we produce but are not available in the County.  Some of these include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah.karlo estates vineyard

Karlo quickly became famous for the first County fortified wine.

Our vineyards are open to guests for hikes, picnics, drawing and painting. Please feel free to explore during the winery’s open hours, even with a glass of wine in hand.

karlo estates productionOur wines are produced on the estate in an 8,000 square foot building which is temperature-controlled to house our wine-making equipment, stainless steel tanks, barrels, bottling line and finished cases.

We make unique wines in both single varietal bottlings and classic blends.

Made in old world style using traditional methods to producekarlo estates wine food-friendly wines that are well balanced and showing all the complexities the county has to offer. Limestone soils of Prince Edward County provide minerality and freshness to the wines, allowing also for the vibrant acidity.

We use an artisanal approach to natural wine making. Everything is hand harvested, and mostly natural ferments with minimal intervention. We allow our fruit to hang on the vine longer and use long cold maceration soaks for our fuller-bodied wines. Although riskier and more labour-intensive, close attention assures more depth of character in diverse and interesting wines.

We are blessed with an optimal location with ideal glacial-deposited limestone soil. Karlo is close enough to the lake to extend the fall season, allowing our fruit to grow to complete maturity. In the end, growing the best grape gives our team the foundation on which to build exceptional wine with character.

karlo estates bridgeThe largest dry stone bridge in North America, this mortar-less structure is made up of 45 tonnes of locally quarried chocolate limestone. The bridge was built in conjunction with the Dry Stone Wall Association of Canada by an international team over nine of the hottest days in late June 2007. Guests are welcome to picnic here to enjoy a glass and the view.
