Little Bug Red - The "Naughty Kitty"

CA$26.00

This wine is named after the Queen of our tasting rooms, Little Bug, a Chimera cat who was born in the barn, her favorite place to be. A Chimera is an individual derived from the many parents it was conceived from.

Other than explaining our mascot kitty being nicknamed, “The Hybrid” because of her complex DNA as a Chimera, what is The Little Bug Red? It's county bargain blended by the venerable Derek Barnett and Spencer Mayer to bring out the best of French-American hybrid Lucie Kuhlmann, 2021 Malbec and property-grown 2022 Frontenac Noir varieties. The nose is greeted by rustic wild blackberries, a hint of oak, then on the palate, creamy vanilla, balanced with an appetizingly crisp finish.

As the most photographed cat in the County, each year Little Bug hosts a photo competition. Post a picture of Little Bug on social media with the hashtag “ #LittleBugPEC “ and every New Years Eve, our team votes for the best picture to win one of our “Rare Finds” wines, ranging in price up to $500 a bottle and worth collecting or as a unique treat.

Winemaker’s Notes

Hand-harvested, the fruit was picked in excellent condition. The berries were small, very intense and flavorful. The grapes were crushed and de-stemmed before fermentation in small lots using selected yeast. Fermentation began quickly and was completed after 10 days when the wine was pressed off the skins and transferred to tank for malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked off after malo and aged in stainless steel tanks until bottling. There it evolved slowly and after 26 months, the wine showed balance, depth and great flavours. It was then filtered and bottled by hand. We look forward to watching this wine evolve over the next few years.

Tasting Notes

This big, dark red has silky tannin, steely structure, and appetizing acidity. On the nose is violet florals with stewed plum, blackberry, cassis/blackcurrant, boysenberry, candied sugar and coffee. The palate is dominated by cherry notes with lesser hints of blackcurrant, evergreen, tar and dark chocolate.

Pairing Notes

Pair oily or creamy dishes; pasta al olio, savoury pies, sweet potato latkes with chutney sour cream and curried onion-apple-white bean topping, fettuccine alfredo, General Tao’s fried tofu, deep fried onion blossoms with garlic cashew cream, black bean Moussaka burger with cashew Béchamel sauce, pine nut and broccoli cream pasta or Italian-style seitan sausages roasted over a bonfire with good friends.
