2020 Sextus

We started Karlo Estates so we could make this wine. The late Richard Karlo was a big lover of old blends. He wanted to prove Canada could achieve such quality. So we set out to make a 6 variety blend to Napoleon III’s 1855 First Growth classification.

In our tenth year of being open to the public, we have achieved Richard’s dream; posthumously. All of us here at Karlo Estates look forward to bringing more of our shared vision to life. May we do Richard, our founder, proud.

Sextus is considered a “unicorn” by wine critics because of the difficulty in getting all six of the original varieties of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Carménère in one bottle.

The wines are made individually then blended for the smoothest, longest taste profile, each variety adding texture, balance and character.

With high-toned aromatics, stewed dark bramble fruits, allspice and dark chocolate, Sextus is immensely complex and ever-changing in the glass. It has concentrated dark purple fruits - plums, cassis, blackberry, black raspberry with flecks of wood spice.

Sextus is taut, yet super-balanced with a rich mid-palate and a finish lifted by fresh acidity.

This cellar monster is built to age with grace and can sit proudly in yours to be enjoyed over many years to come.
